August 2 - The Dead Man's Hand
It happened in the Black Hills of Dakota. A pair of "aces and eights" was the hand held by James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok when he was shot in the back of the head by "Crooked Nose" Mc Call. There is speculation as to what the fifth card "Wild Bill" was holding at the time of his demise, but "aces and eights," all black cards, has been known as the "dead man's hand" ever since August 2, 1876.
