July 29 - Eris is announced.

Because Eris was larger than Pluto, its discoverers initially described it as the solar system's tenth planet.  The International Astonomical Union (IAU) then defined "planet" for the first time, and along with Pluto, Ceres, Haumea and Makemake, Eris was defined as a "dwarf" planet.
